could "achieve" a certain state of consciousness 
and consider it the "end point" and then *stay*

It kind of goes down as "My Samadhi is better than your Samadhi". In
actuality it is all a matter of attention. Of course where the
attention is pointed at and why is a wonder and certainly seems to be
where ever it needs to be. As a friend of mine said so succintcly.
"You will have every experience you need to have until you wake up."
Attention comes and goes on some schedule and where it stops nobody
knows to quote the carney who spins the wheel of fortune. Tom
