I learned that lesson years ago while riding my bicycle in a small 
college town in Oregon. I went through a stop sign, not flouting the  
law but thinking the stop sign was just for cars, and received a 
ticket. The campus lawyer told me "ignorance is no excuse" and I had 
to pay the fine anyway.
