Hi Geoff,

Your comment on mapping not being a problem on a virtual server is what I
suspected, though I'm uncertain to what degree hosting companies are using
virtual server software such as Microsoft's new free Virtual Server 2005 or
VMware in a production environment to get around these issues. Virtualizing
would seem to be an obvious solution, but the obvious question is what
production issues it brings up, ie. performance and security. I just don't
know enough about virtualization in a production hosting environment it, but
would appreciate any input you or others have on the topic.

Assuming this is actually done but these "virtual server plans" are more
expensive, and assuming your clients are like mine where cost considerations
always prevail, I still have to think that shared hosting is the only thing
that will fly for many or most of my clients. Unfortunately, I tire of
constantly being pointed to fasthit and hostingfuse as my only reasonable
hosting options for shared hosting. (Sorry Kay, I was thinking this even
before your response! <G>) The choice of the host is always based on so many
variables, and experience with farcry in a shared environment is only one.

It would be nice to finally have some clear and comprehensive documentation
on shared server setup. Perhaps its out there and I haven't run upon it yet.
It seems to be mentioned in bits and pieces in various forums, with possibly
various solutions, yet with no real documentation. I'm only just getting
back to this issue after setting it aside for some time, so forgive me if
this is now a moot point. I'll just take a link and walk away with my tail
between my legs. But if not, could I put in another vote?<G> It just doesn't
make sense to me.

Of course this is a complex issue, but don't we all deal with complex issues
every day? Your comment "If hosts took the time to understand the framework
a bit better then it would certainly be possible to run as many farycry
projects as you likeoff a single FarCry library installation" made me think,
heck, I'm more than willing to take the time to understand it better, and
would prefer to implement it on a host such Crystaltech.com, but every time
I approach the issue it seems to be so "fuzzy" that I'm not sure it's worth
investing valuable time in if it's going to be a brick wall. Plus,
"discovering" the magic genie has to be a somewhat reasonable proposition,
as I need to put bread and butter on the table too. I don't currently have
the luxury of tons of non-billable hours. Any revelations appreciated!
