Here's a link to a blog post I wrote about this. The reason it always puts the link at the top is because the tree and the editor are in different iframes and when you click on the tree your editor loses focus and the position is therefore lost as well. I solved this by adding an insert similar to the image and file that are directly below the editor. Proceed with caution because you have to edit some of the core files to get this to work.
