I'm not speaking for myself because we have implemented our own menus. But, the old template had an example of multi level menus and the Aura template doesn't. I learnt everything I know from the original template. While I agree that every site will implement menu's in a different way, I think what is lacking in the latest template releases is "example" code showing multi level menus. That seems to be what most of the questions revolve around. The rest (using News, Links, etc.) has plenty of examples or walkthroughs on the FarCry site.
