The biggest drawback of top posting is the un-necessary billions of lines tagged on the end. Doesn't matter so much now but it used to.
If you bottom post you normally only post after the last email so it cuts it down and keeps the context. Most email clients default to top posting and just truncated the emails at some number of characters.
