Later on he learns from the Eldar I think or maybe Macros himself that there is no greater or lesser path ... and I also doubt Ray had decided Miranda and Nakor were going to be demons until much much later in any event, and that twist may necessitate modifying some earlier explanations to make it all work together, but hey I like that sort of thing, since to me the nuances of magic are less important than realizing its just a tool and Ray could have made Pug a kickass blacksmith instead of a magician with a talent for swinging hammers...
