FYI, Activision just relaunched sierra as an indie Dev publisher.
Additionally, I think you are not alone in the IP limbo. From what I
pieced together on the internet, there was some major chaos at the
end. Sierra went through a myriad of owners, from the Davidson group
to the French global conglomerate at its end. At one point one owner
shut down Dynamix even though they were making some of the most
successful games in the company ( Tribes, et al).
I was stoked to see that Sierra is back. They have already announced a
new Kings Quest game and I have a feeling we'll be seeing a new Police
Quest game as Jim Walls (creator of Police Quest) was planning on
releasing a new games based on the PQ series but the Kickstarter failed
due to pretty much non-existing marketing. While they were planning on
continuing development with it outside of being crowdfunded, they simply
disappeared which leads me to believe Acti-Blizzard started talking to
them about reinventing the Quest series under the new Sierra.
