I understand all too well. I've been having great difficulty feeling very alone in the daily commitment, let alone the financial side.
Is there a paypal address that can be shared publicly (like on facebook) for donations? It might help a little if there were a 501(c)3 rescue who will allow donations to be sent to them, noted for Karen's work, that will then purchase food for her (since people are often more inclined to donate to 501(c)3.
