Thanks, Margo (and everyone who helped).  Lucky actually ate the RC s/o diet
tonight!  And he is at least going out to the cat boxes in the garage rather
than trying to pee in the house.  We have some anti-inflammatory to help
with his "urgency" I hope.
Hopefully we're crossing a bridge toward better health for Lucky!  I know I
can feed him separately, the problem is, the other cats still eat the dry
food, and I need to keep him out of it.

        Since there was no evidence of crystals, Id just go for a high meat
canned food (like the EVO 95% varieties), without the acidifiers. Using that
could incline him towards oxylate stones, which are much more difficult to
deal with.
