I've gotten the impression that there's not much going on in the way of

Although FeLV belongs to the family Retroviridae, it belongs to the genus
Oncornavirinae. The feline retrovirus of human interest is the FIV
retrovirus of the genus Lentivirinae because it belongs to same genus as the
human AIDS virus.
This is one instance where humans are test subjects for feline research! ;-)
