Dear Robin,
Well it would depend on the size of the drum carder (number of drums, etc.
and volume of wool) and the size of the sewing machine motor. Are you
talking about the small motor on on older home machines or the very large
motor mounted underneath industrial sewing machines?
The small motor from an old home sewing machine would say something like
1/15 th horse power and fits in the palm of your hand. I use one of these
to drive my jumbo flyer to ply yarns. It isn't enough power for a drum
carder, unless it is a tiny one of some sort. I use a 1/4th horse power
motor (attached to a gear reduction box to yield 50 revolutions per minute
of the carder) to drive my Louet drum carder, which is just a two drum
ordinary sort of drum carder that will card 2 ounces of wool at a time. My
industrial sewing machine has a large 2/3rds horsepower motor which
can/does run for hours with out overheating and would drive most anything.
So, what's the sewing machine motor like? and how many drums has the carder?
