I consider myself a pretty accomplished spinner, and I can usually choose
the correct fiber for the yarn I'm after, but I'm stumped with this one...

I bought a couple of ounces of a multicolored fiber (I hesitate to call it
roving) from LaLana wools recently. I believe it is a Romney and Mohair
blend. I was expecting a pretty long staple length, both with because of
the Romney/mohair and because I know that the yarns they sell from this
same blend are a thick, softly spun single.

However, the fiber that I have is *very* short. Maybe 2 inches. Not at all
what I was expecting. It almost looks like combing leavings, not processed
fiber ready to be spun. I sampled some of it, but I can't get it to hold
together unless I spin it fairly fine with a high twist. The Romney and
mohair is a little coarse for that treatment, and the yarn comes out pretty
harsh.

Since what I was envisioning for this fiber was a softly spun, lumpy single,
this is just not making me happy. It is destined to be an accent in a
larger piece, so I didn't buy very much. And I can still blend it with
another fiber and spin my thick yarn that way, so all is not lost.

But I'm confused. Has anyone ever bought spinning fibers from LaLana
before? Are they usually long staple or as short as mine? Did I just get a
bad batch, or is this the normal thing? Any suggestions as to how to spin
this stuff?

Thanks!
