Perhaps the Romney you spin is particularly soft and crimpy? If it's
hard to distinguish from, say, Corriedale, then it might be spinnable at
that short a length. Most of the Romney I've seen is quite coarse by my
standards, and has little crimp. The specific lamb's fleece I was
referring to was reasonably soft, of course, being lamb. The staple was
4 inches, with about 6-7 crimps per inch, so it was quite crimpy for
Romney that I've seen. But it wouldn't hold together without so much
twist that the yarn was very harsh in spite of the softness of lamb.

The only thing I spin from the fold is commercially combed top :) I
generally drum card my fibers in the 5-8 inch range, but can handcard up
to 7 inches, and of course it's an easy length to comb.

Why do you have so much 3 inch Romney?
