This issue has been much on my mind of late, too :) My dh has 3 pairs
of handknit socks: one of commercial worsted weight yarn that was way
too softly spun, one of dk weight handspun ditto, and one of specially
spun Shetland, fingering weight.
The two heavier pairs of socks have needed what seemed like constant
darning, particularly the commercial yarn pair. The Shetland pair have
been holding up better--I spun them to be sock yarn. The undercoat has
worn out under the ball of the foot, and under the heel, but the coarser
outer coat is holding up in those areas.
I was wondering if anyone has come up with a way to reinforce under the
heel and under the ball of the foot. These areas wear out very
quickly. I may also decide to change my toe decrease method. I
generally do the double decreases on each side of the foot, but the
stitches between get pulled further and further apart until it looks
like it has laddered, and starts to break.

who finally understands why women used to have darning baskets full of
stockings :)
