I've never done anything about reinforcing toes or heels, but I HAVE used a
thin strand of elastic thread running along with the knitting yarn to make
ribbing stretchier.
It would seem that running a thin, strong synthetic "binder" thread along
with the knitting yarn at strategic points wouldn't add bulk to the sock,
but would add to the wearing qualities.
If I'm not mistaken, some commercial socks are made this way for extra hard
wear.

P.S. Could somebody give me a tip on how to felt or wear out my first
socks - they're ugly, but warm, made from 3-ply yarn from a bastard sheep
that belonged to farmer Berg out behind the railroad trestle, nearly 20
years old, and even padding around the house sockfooted doesn't faze them.
So much for non-art socks.
