Since we are judging yarns, and not the finished garment we have to look at how a particular yarn would end up in the finished garment. It would not be wise to take a soft, lofty yarn and try to spin it so that it could take the abuse of use in an outer garment. Just spinning a coarser Romney woolen, lightly with little twist does not make it suitable for a baby blanket. An every day sweater might not be best made with a short wool like Merino as it tends to pill more easily. You could, however, make an every day sweater from a longer soft wool like Corriedale if you did a worsted yarn with multiple plys. Does that help?
