I think that the purpose of judging skeins is to compare quality of similar products.
I find it difficult to score Singles in the same category as Plied yarns. There's a whole set of potential areas for improvement in plying: Are the 2 or more plies appropriate for each other? Is the plying twist appropriate for the singles? Are the plies evenly tensioned? I also like to see categories for fiber blends, and cotton, flax, camelid, rabbit, wool, hand dyed, and novelty. Also there's a dilemna of people entering a hand-dyed 3 ply. Should that go in multi-plied or in hand-dyed? One might also consider some experience catergories, such as spinning less than 3, 6, 12 months. On the other hand there might not be sufficient skeins to fill the categoreis, and then the fair won't offer them the next year. One thing that I think is critical is to ensure that the skeins entered have a stated specific purpose.
