To Karen,
I'd also like to see an article on different sizes and materials of spindle whorls for drop spindles, and what, if any effect they have on the spun yarn. Also, the differences between top, bottom and middle whorled spindles and the effect on the spun yarn.
Some folks here in Germany had the same thoughts about differences of spindles, but they didn't go that far to have a look at the yarn also. It's about how old the style of the whorl is (perhaps a reconstruction), weight, which wood was used for the stick, and so on.
So they constructed a sheet where you have to fill in all specifications of one spindle, attach photos or drawings and sent it back to them. Dead line is Dec., 31th 2005, because of not enough entries until Dec., 31th 2004.
I've already send my five sheets in.
If anyone is interested, I'll take some time this evening and translate the sheet.
Ilona
