I've made any number of handspun socks myself that didn't stand up to use, before stumbling on the 'secret' for good sock yarn that really will stand up to long use. See my website, <http://www.hjsstudio.com/sockyarn.html>, or for those who don't want to bother, try medium wools with 15% by weight of mohair blended in, and spin 3-ply yarns. Works! :)
Holly,
Thanks so much for the link to your site. The information is wonderful and so well explained! Your sharing of your experiences are most generous. It was also very timely as my spinning group is going to start spinning sock yarn for a "study" group in the fall of knitting socks with your handspun yarn. I'm the group leader so I feel like I've found a gold mine. I admit I'm better at knitting socks than spinning yarns! I will post your web address in our newsletter and recommend everyone give it a good read.
Thanks!
