I don't know about the prune-like problem or blisters on the skin, but
my SIL (a nurse) identified small, under-the-skin bumps on my hands
(look rather like pimples or tiny blisters well under the skin) that
itch as a sign of an allergy to some sort of stuff you put on your
hands. That could be a detergent (including one you've used for years),
a soap, a lotion, stuff on or in the wool you're knitting, etc.
For the itchiness, soak your hands in the hottest water you can stand.
If you've got an allergic reaction, the itching will increase, then
subside, and stop for several hours. I use this for relief from the
itching of bug bites in the summer--I appear to be both the favorite
snack of no see ums and increasingly allergic to them. The heat makes
histimine release, and it takes a long time for it to build up again
enough to resume itching. Sometimes I can even get a full night's sleep
after spot soaking the bites!
If the problem is some sort of eczema, try the juice of an aloe leaf. I
apply that to small spots of eczema that I get from time to time, and it
clears it up fast--sometimes in just a day, with a few applications.
I used to try the OTC cortisone creams for problems like these, but
found that they really don't work, at least for me. These natural
remedies are effective, cheap, and have no negative side effects. I
hope they help!
