A very interesting discussion of late on what makes up a good spinners
flock.
When I get prospective customers wondering what breed of sheep to buy, I
honestly tell them to try an assortment of fleece types first, to
determine what
type of fiber they prefer to work with. Example: No point in buying Shetlands
if you want rug warping yarn, and the reverse is true to not buy Karukul if
you want to knit baby soft items. Then I tell them to research sheep breeds
within that category to see what type of sheep and disposition fits their
preferences and pocket book.
There are some multi purpose breeds out there that fit the bill of luxury
fiber, and good growth rates for carcass. One breed not mentioned previously
would be the Bluefaced Leicester. A long wool breed (with a medium
wool micron)
with good luster to the wool, higher prolificacy, good lamb growth rates,
and mellow dispositions. It also makes a good crossing breed for imparting it
qualities on a wide range of other breeds.
It is just a matter of taking the time to do the research in order to find
the perfect match.
