Not a wise shortcut, in my opinion, especially for knitting. Washing
the yarn finishes it, allows it to bloom, and may greatly change the
gauge at which you should be working.
I like to get the surprises over before I start knitting.
Besides, clean fresh yarn is a joy to knit with - washing a skein
takes a few minutes, then it dries in a day or so.
