I used to use paraffin -- the kind used for sealing jam
jars -- on my bicycle chain. One dropped the chain into the
melted wax, let it soak, hung it to drip-dry -- and then had
to hand-break every joint in the chain. But it didn't come
off on your socks, and it kept dirt out of the bearings.

(Nowadays, I hand the bike over to the mechanic at the Trail
House.)

Before you oil anything, be sure to give all the
to-be-oiled surfaces, a good wipe down.

And if it's really gunky, put on a thin layer of new oil,
wait for a while, and wipe *that* off before oiling.
Nothing gets oil off like oil. (I generally use Eucerin or
olive oil to clean my hands when I've got black grease on
them, but any fat, grease, or oil will work.)
