All I can say is, I'm NOT impressed by sectional warping, if this is the
way it's supposed to be done. This sloppiness of tension would not be
acceptable to me on any regular-beam loom.
Holly, warping sectionally produces a smooth, evenly
tensioned warp with every section smooth and flat.......
there should be no sloppiness.
You were concerned about the tie-on cords....... are they
actually thick cords? I use 100 pound test fishing
line...... Gorillawire, or Spiderwire, or some such. Even
the silk/tencel warp at 50 epi showed nary a bump. You can
space the cord out in the section and guide the first few
turns of warp to lie smoothly, then the rest will follow.
Are you using an AVL tension box? After the threads go
through the first reed, they are put over and under the
dowels for tensioning. If adjusting the dowels does not give
you the tension you need, wrap the thread around a dowel, or
two, until you get the desired tension. It's best to check
the tension on the first few threads, so you don't have to
take them all out to make these adjustments.j
Sley the next reed the width of the beam's sections, or
slightly wider, you can turn that reed to adjust the width
of the section.
Make sure you are turning the beam the right direction!! I
have heard sad stories of folks who turned it the wrong way
and the tension arm won't hold the tension.
I don't use the handle to turn the beam, I sit right in
front of the beam, next to the tension box, and turn it by
hand. That way I can be sure everything is going on
smoothly. Mark one of the beams rakes with something bright
and counting each revolution shouldn't be a problem.
Sectional warping should be an easy, fairly quick way to
wind a smooth, even warp with no tangles or crossed threads.
Relax and let the loom be your friend.
If you have any more problems, give a holler.
