Robin, can you finger crochet or use a crochet hook to make a chain? 
Navajo plying is just doing that while inserting twist :)  Pull the 
loops out longer to give your hands more room to work, and treadle more 
slowly than you normally do while plying, until you get the hang of it.

What are you planning to make with the yarn?
