I've long wanted to do more handcombing/true worsted spinning, and
lately I got out my Peter Teal book and tried his oil method.
I used a syringe to measure 6 ml of olive oil and 6 ml of water and
sprinkled it over a little more fiber than he specified--45 grams
instead of 40.
The result was very oily, which I guess it was supposed to be, just a
lot more oily than I expected. Felt good to my hands, though :)
What was a problem was the way the wool clung to itself and to the combs
so that as I drew the working comb away from the static comb, the wool
on the static comb would cling to the working comb and essentially try
to draw off a top.
I had to either break the 'top' or continue combing, and either approach
ended up with more tangles and messed up fibers than I ever had with my
old method of occasionally spritzing the fiber with water if needed to
control static.
What am I missing? Certainly, when I finally drew off a rather rough
top, it was easy to spin 'in the oil', but the quality wasn't what I am
used to getting because of the tangles, and there was no way I was going
to try planking with this mess.
Help!
