Absolutely! I caused serious data loss on my internal HD when I
neglected that advice.

ALL SCSI devices in the chain shouuld be on before booting the
computer. I (once again, I learn slowly) caused major data loss by
leaving a device off, and it took me a week or so to discover why
Norton was causing more problems than it was fixing.

To Andrew Stiller, I have to say, your problems sound to me like SCSI
problems, if the HD itself hasn't gone south. A cable gone bad, a
dirty connector (try turning everything off and unplugging and
replugging each connector), something moved, the order of devices
changed (even though officially this is not supposed to make a
difference), or a SCSI ID number conflict (I've had that one, too! It
makes your computer not boot, or if it does, it limps most
pathetically.) Have you moved or changed ANYTHING in your SCSI chain
in the week or so before the problems started?
