Actually this sounds more like a termination problem to me. Let me guess a little: You bought a new computer. Perhaps while moving stuff from the old to the new you unconnected devices from the old computer? Perhaps you disconnected the last device, and now your SCSI chain ends unterminated, because the HD doesn't have internal termination, whereas the other had, or had a terminator connected to it? Is there a terminator connected to the HD (or whatever is the last device in the chain)?
