What version are you using Christopher?  This process you describe does not
exist in recent versions of Finale.  Multiple spaces (or multiple hyphens)
in the Edit Lyrics text are treated identical to a single space (or hyphen)
when click-assignment is performed.  I believe this has been true since
v2000.  You're right that it used to work that way, but not in a long time.
The change was made the same time that type-in-score entry was revised to
automatically change syllable order in the Edit Lyrics window; I assumed
the two were somehow related.

That's not true anymore either.  In FinMac2002, the text in the Edit Lyrics
window is NOT monospaced (unless you happen to format your lyrics for a
monospaced font).
