What version are you using Christopher? This process you describe does not exist in recent versions of Finale. Multiple spaces (or multiple hyphens) in the Edit Lyrics text are treated identical to a single space (or hyphen) when click-assignment is performed. I believe this has been true since v2000. You're right that it used to work that way, but not in a long time. That's not true anymore either.
