Oopsy! I just checked, and sure enough, the spaces in click-assign don't behave like that anymore; the manual suggests opt-space then space for each note in a melisma. I haven't accounted for melismas in the Edit Window in a long time, a couple versions back at least. I assumed (wrongly) that it was the same. In FinMac2002, the text in the Edit Lyrics >window is NOT monospaced (unless you happen to format your lyrics for a >monospaced font). Dang! Just checked that, too, and sure enough, not monospaced. I have my default lyric font set to Monaco (easier to see on my high-res screen when editing, then I change it afterward), which the reason for my perception of that particular booboo. Sorry.
