The one exception that I happen to have run into is in some Contemporary
Christian arrangements where there is a single violin part (encompassing
both the normal 1st and 2nd sections) and you can easily write in divisi a
3 and leave it up to the principal player to figure out what to do.
Broadway show books are a whole different ballgame, and use a variety of
methods.  We're gearing up to do "King & I" next summer, and I've learned
that the violin books are Violin A (divisi), Violin B (divisi), and Violin
C (no divisi), and that the original pit orchestra used just 5 violins!
