I second that.  In fact, I've suggested it before, but have always been
shot down.  There are some people on this list who think it's important
for non-members to be able to post.  But we could set it up so that if a
non-member wanted to make a legitimate post, the list could send them an
e-mail that gives instructions on how to subscribe.  Another argument is
that the spammers could just subscribe, post their spam and then
unsubscribe.  But if that was going to happen, why doesn't it happen on
lists that only accept posts from members?  I'll tell you why.  Because
it's too much trouble for the spammers.  Most of them use a fake
address, or don't bother to check mail in an account that's just going
to be deleted, so they wouldn't even see the e-mail telling them how to
subscribe.
