I wasn't saying there was a justification, and I can't envisage a situation
where it would seem called for on this list, or on most lists. I simply added
the proviso to cover unforeseen situations where it *might* be appropriate. (It
might be a bit too dogmatic to say it could *never* be justified.)
A filter to strip attachments (which I suppose is what you mean by
binaries) is possible, and at least two Yahoo! lists I belong to actually do
this. (One of them is the Orchestra List, which some on the Finale list belong
to also.)
I believe these lists also stop H.T.M.L. being posted, too. Rather than
blocking such posts altogether, they just strip away the H.T.M.L. and allow the
plain text through. I think this is appropriate, and that blocking such posts
altogether is too harsh, because I think many of thost who post in H.T.M.L.
probably aren't aware they're doing it, or don't know how to stop doing it, and
blocking them completely would be too harsh and punitive.
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
