Now let me tell you the idea I had in the back of my head: since these are pieces for several voices and continuo that already have incipits indicating the original notation, rather than have another little staff between the incipit and the music itself, I was thinking of adding the range _before_ the clef on the main staff, which would simply involve adding an empty measure to the left of the clef. Probably not very kosher...
I do have a question the Ossia method: I created the scratch staff as recommended, the ossia. But then when I hide the scratch staff the ossia gets hidden also. What am I doing wrong?

Dear Dennis,
It is possible to add a measure before the first bar of the
choral score to use for ranges, original notation, etc., but there are
problems: You have to cancel the left bar line and the meter, move the
bracket, draw a graphic left line after the bracket, and change the
measure number settings. In addition, you can't get the beginning of a
reduction or accompaniment to look right without using drastic
measures such as white-out. I have seen very small note heads
vertically aligned given at the beginning of the first bar of music
before the meter (Oxford Book of English Madrigals), but that involves
other problems. The Ossia method is fine, but it's cumbersome and not
at all well designed. You can see how it looks in the score I sent you
and maybe check some of the settings in the file.
BTW, The Ossia Tool works pretty well for things like hand bell
charts and chant incipits that are located above the first system. EPS
graphics also work well for this. If you can solve the EPS problems,
you will have the little EPS file that you can use over and over for
other pieces - like a templet.
