The one that I scanned was just one of scads that I happened to have
in a home-made collection of 3-part viol consort music that my group
is playing at a wedding at the end of the month. The scan is from a
Fantasia by Giovanni Bassano, published by Fretwork Editions. I think
that Fretwork is just the publishing name for the editor, Richard
Charteris, since I've never seen a single thing from Fretwork that
wasn't edited by him (he's actually quite a respectable editor). In
the same collection for our wedding gig, there are other editions by
Charteris of music by Coprario and Lupo, who are two of the big
hitters of the viol repertory (Coprario may seem to be Italian, but
it was actually Mr. Cooper, using an Italianized name; Lupo really
was Italian, but 2nd-generation in England -- he was really an
English composer in terms of the style of th emusic).

Coprario's music is in a later style (the Bassano has Landini
cadences and is pretty conservative), closer to Purcell's viol music
than to the more mainstream style of Lupo. In Charteris's editions,
only the Bassano and Lupo editions have range finders. I don't know
why that would be (the Coprario and Bassano editions are both from
1991/1993, and the Lupo 2001), except that the Bassano and Lupo tend
to have more exotic clefs in the original sources than the Coprario.
But the range finders don't really have anything to do with the
original sources, so I'm at a loss as to why Charteris would include
them in some editions and omit them in others.
