Oops. I didn't write what I really meant to say. I don't consider it a design flaw that syllables shift from one note to another, across system boundaries, but that it can happen that the syllable assigned to the last note of a particular staff in a score shifts to the first note of the beginning of whatever the next staff is in the score when the syllable count is changed, and that because of the guard system, shift lyrics cannot be used to undo this.

Ah ha! To guard against possibly tripping up against that particular "feature" is the reason why some (like me!) put lyrics for different staves into different verses or choruses. Soprano is verse 1, alto is verse 2, etc.

Copy and paste between verses works well when everyone has almost the same lyrics, because even if there are a couple of syllables difference, each staff can be freely edited without changing the others.

I don't remember who on this list gave me that particular advice, but thank you!
