Having done more than my share of letterpress printing, I can tell you that a sentence space (i.e., the space after any sentence-ending punctuation) is almost always the same as a word space (the space between two adjacent words within a sentence). A sentence space is occasionally *slightly* wider than a word space, but it is never equal to 2 (or 3, heaven forbid!) word spaces, unless the desired effect is very intentionally non-traditional.
