i have always perceived this as being specific to the states, it _seems_ to me that all the messages where i have noticed this habit were written by americans (except for a friend of mine who whacks the hell out of the space bar with her thumb, causing 2-3 spaces between each word!). i am curious though, are there any non-americans who have done this, or still do this, and is it (was it ever?) a common practice in your country as well?

Because we are old geezers who learned to type on typewriters, which were monospaced and where the standard practice was two spaces after the period at the end of a sentence.
okay, no silly jokes about smallcase chippewa being the last person one should trust to understand typographic standards, eh? three spaces following periods, two following question and exclamation marks...
