I don't know if it was specific to the US, but it is definitely the
case that I was taught two spaces in typing class, as was everyone I
know who took typing classes on typewriters (i.e., learned to type
before computers).

And it was only after proportional-spaced fonts came to the normal
computer user that it was abandoned in favor of what was explained as
normal typographic convention for proportional fonts (even in the age
of typewriters).

There are plenty of different typographic conventions in different
countries, such as different styles of quotation marks and different
methods for indicating emphasis, so it shouldn't be surprising that
the two spaces after the period might also be country-specific.

But today, it's not justified any longer.

Or, so it seems to me.
