An American typist, I fixed my doubled-space habit (period, colon,
question/exclamation mark only) when I started using a word processor for
writing articles that went straight to the typesetting machine, which
choked on the doubled spaces. (That was 1980.)

But I'm responding because I wonder my French correspondents use a space
*before* question and exclamation marks.
