I have found that, in word usage as with so many things, those who worship tradition most devoutly are generally adhering to a tradition that is about 50 years old and no more. When someone resists change on the grounds that it should be as it always has been, it's fun to dig out an old book making a similar argument for some then-traditional practice which is now hopelessly obsolete.

Regarding "correct", I remember liking what Theodore Bernstein wrote on the topic in the preface to The Careful Writer. (I intended to review it again just now, but the book is mysteriously absent from my shelf....)
