According to the standards of Western music notation, yes, it is wrong. I'm not saying an editor should have changed it, I'm not saying we should make fun of Bartok, I'm not calling him stupid or making a value judgment. But I would still call it wrong. Bartok chose to write the key signature the wrong way.

First of all, I didn't imply that there is only one way to write key sigs. What I basically said was that in our commonly accepted system there is one *right* way. And second, this is the second time in as many weeks that a list member has chosen to belittle me personally, and I resent it.
Aaron, I apologize, I didn't mean to belittle you personally, just making a point.
In hindsight, I should have substituted David Bailey instead of Aaron Sherber because the comparison with Bartok works well -- I can state without equivocation in my case it would be justified (I shouldn't have said any such thing concerning Aaron, since I don't know his music) -- the only David Baileys who make it into the music history books are going to be others than me (there is one in the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.)
My main point is that while I do maintain with my students an adherence to what these days is the traditional placement of flats and sharps in key signatures, any insistence on these being "right" is not going to have any effect on the evolution of music -- I'll just be another traditionalist teacher scoffed at as trying to hold the floodwaters of change back.
Again, Aaron, I apologize to you for not having thought more carefully in my previous response.
David
