I could see something like Matthew's point if Finale would provide a function whereby we could define the percussion patch sounds once (a variation of the Instrument List?) as a library for each sound module we might use.
Isn't that what the Percussion Maps library is supposed to do?
It does, to a point. It isn't easy, it isn't clear (witness the many Finale users who have given up on using Percussion maps and the many others who ask about how to use it after reading the documentation and failing in their own attempts).
I think a more text-based definition of percussion maps, and a guarantee that they will always work properly once defined would go a long way to eliminating the voodoo that seems to be required to get them to work properly currently.
Leaving them completely independent of clefs would be important also. Who cares about Treble Clef Entry / Bass Clef Display or General Midi Entry / General Midi Display or any other clef stuff? Play a midi note and you should get that percussion sound, placed on the exact staff location you define it to appear. Even if you don't play the note in, you should be able, using either simple or speedy entry, to place a note in the place previously defined by you for a particular sound (snare drum, bass drum, hi-hat, whatever) and it will play back properly. Currently it only does that if you have jumped through all the necessary hoops (including the clef-entry/clef-playback selection and editing) and the moon is in the proper phase and you have said the magic incantations backwards while standing blindfolded on one foot.
