I agree. I don't think there should be *no* colors by default, just better colors. Almost every professional Finale user I know customizes their colors, but many newbies don't even realize that's an option, and some can't be bothered, despite the awfulness of the defaults. Sibelius's default colors are much nicer. In fact, I've basically modified my default Finale colors to match Sibelius.
Plus, there are things like the Staff Style bar which should clearly be gray until selected. I went through the hassle of toggling it on and off (like you) for a long time, until it occurred to me that I just needed to make the color less distracting. (Everything else draws on top of it, too, so it doesn't hide anything important.) Little things like this, if set by default, would go a long way towards making Finale friendlier and more attractive to new users.
