[long explanation of Finale 2004 text block autosave file overwrite
bug]

This bug was corrected in Fin2005b, but when working with Fin2004,
it's not safe to use autosave when working with multiple documents.

Um, that's all very interesting, but simply has nothing to do with
your recommendation, to turn off AutoSave.

Um, actually yes it does, in the versions of Finale where the text block bug is present (Fin2004 and the initial release of Fin2005). Turning off autosave prevents the text block bug from occurring.

With this current bug,
turning ON AutoSave could be what saves your bacon.

Yes, in Finale 2006, because Finale 2006 has no text block bug. That's why I recommended turning autosave _on_ in Fin2006.

The only caveat I mentioned was that you probably didn't want to set Fin2006 to autosave _every minute_ because that vastly increases the likelihood that when all of the entries in your file are mysteriously erased, autosave might kick in before you had a chance to close the file, thus ruining your autosave backup. It's true in this case you could simply revert to your most recent manual backup -- but of course, you could do that with autosave off, too.

And, of course, there's also the backup file that you can choose to
create each time you manually save a file, and that might save you if
you saved and the real file had the data missing.

Except the backup file is always identical to the most recently manually saved version, so if you manually save bad data into the file, the backup file will be of no use.
