You can easily be fooled by your own eyes when proofreading, particulary if you are the one doing the entry, because sometimes your mind will see

technique is be constanly vigilant while doing the entry. Rushing always creates a higher error rate, so just look twice at the original and also what you've just done. This will take care of the bulk of it. I find that
proofreading onscreen is not effective.

I can only proof on screen with the very simplest of files. There's something about the way I (we?) see on a screen that encourages the eye to skip over things. Proofing on a hard copy is a normal part of my workflow, and I still miss things - though not nearly as many.

I print out a hard copy and go
note by note against the original. And, as the final step, I always insist
that my composer/arranger clients proof my work before the finals are
printed and delivered. (or in lieu of that, I will ask a 2nd set of eyes, when neccessary-Even then, I have had them miss stuff as well). But, as a
rule, I have found that the pace of the work has a dramatic impact on
errors; be patient and diligent and leave yourself enough time (as
possible) to not push the envelope for speed. When you're on a project
that's at the speed of light, errors will occur, and I don't think that's
desireable or acceptable, but merely a fact to be reckoned with.

Hi everyone:

I'm curious about how members of the list handle proofing of your
files. I find that when I do this, my mind really beings to wander
about 20 minutes into doing this. I typically check files at least
four times, and I still find mistakes.

I know that the big boys such as Barenreiter must have a whole set of
proofers on staff when they check files, but I obviously don't have
their budgets. While I am more forgiving of myself for a wrong
editorial decision, allowing wrong notes into my score simply because
I failed to catch them during a proofing process just drives me nuts.

Thanks so much.
