This is an example of what I mean by my strictures being a simplification. Vibrato in Bq. music, at least IMO, was intended for soloists. If you have an orchestral string section (as, for example, in the _Royal Fireworks Music_) vibrato is (again IMO) as inappropriate for the main string body as would be any other individual ornamentation. There is numerous contemporary testimony that the main point of an orchestra is to sound *as one*, and indiv. vibratos would destroy that effect.

Now it is unnecessary to go into all that w. an amateur string section. The only thing they have to know is that *for them* vibrato would be wrong. If somebody later asks how come it's OK for the vn. and fl. soloists to use vibrato, then a further explanation would be given--but to start? No.
