Erg, that is frustrating. So, instead of getting a complete sound set that someone could use to compose, upgrading to Finale 2008 gets you colored noteheads and boomwhacker sounds......I don't think Sibelius 5's sounds lack a bari sax..........
To be fair, the SmartMusic soundfont which ships with Finale (and has for many versions) is a full GM soundset and has the further capability of being able to produce sounds outside what the "normal" range might be, so for instance you can use the Flute patch to listen to a Bass Flute part. None of the Garritan sounds will play at all outside their sampled range.
And not all of the sounds which are included with Sibelius5 are Garritan sounds -- some come from other sample libraries, and they, too, have a GM sounset to cover instruments not included in the higher-quality sample library instruments they used.
So both Finale and Sibelius will allow full playback of any score, just not all with the same high-quality samples.
The biggest advantage of Sibelius over Finale is that Sibelius will allow you to use the GM soundset on some tracks, along with the higher quality sample libraries on other tracks, so that you can cover all the bases at once.
With Finale, one has to make a choice -- it's all or nothing. Either use the higher quality samples and just suck it up that they didn't see fit to license full soundsets, or use the SmartMusic soundfont and lose the use of higher quality samples.
