Cool -- I wasn't aware they had made the SmartMusic soundfont into a VST
device.
But you can't combine the SmartMusic with GPO sounds within the same
instance of Kontakt, so if your hardware is limited as to how many
instances of Kontakt2 it can handle this could be a problem. And
another limitation of Finale is that you have to choose either Midi
output or Kontakt output. So if you're looking for a very special sound
that you might have in a soundfont which can be played through your
soundcard, you can't mix that with any of the Finale built-in sounds.
Sibelius lets the user set things up so that you select on a
staff-by-staff basis, whether you want midi output or Kontakt output.
So it is possible in Sibelius to have lots of midi devices along with
Kontakt playback.
One can hope that Finale will follow suit with Fin2009 and allow for
greater mixing of devices for playback.
But at least one can use the SmartMusic GM soundfont with the Garritan
sounds, to fill in for those instruments which are missing from the GPO
sounds.
That's a very welcome improvement over Fin2007!
